Eastern Remarks is an independent magazine of reporting, essays and criticism about Eastern Europe — its places, its people and the ideas that travel through it.
We publish slowly and deliberately. Every piece is commissioned, edited and fact-checked, and written to be read in full. We are interested in what lasts longer than a news cycle: the context behind the headlines, the voices that rarely reach them, and the culture that shapes how the region sees itself.
What we publish
- The Latest, Analysis and Opinion — what is happening, what it means, and what we think.
- Reportage, Interviews and Essays — stories from the ground, conversations, and long-form reflection.
- Culture — books, music, film and ideas.
- Fiction & Poetry — new writing from the region and beyond.
How we work
Our reporting follows our Editorial Standards. When we get something wrong, we correct it openly. You can see who makes the magazine on our Masthead, and writers can find out how to work with us on the Submissions page.
