Editorial Standards & Corrections

What readers can expect from us, and what we do when we get something wrong.

Accuracy

We check facts before we publish. Names, numbers, dates, quotes and claims are verified against primary sources wherever possible. Reported pieces are reviewed by at least one editor other than the writer.

Sources

  • We identify our sources whenever we can, and tell readers how we know what we report.
  • We grant anonymity only when a source faces a real risk, the information is important and cannot be obtained otherwise. Editors know the identity of every anonymous source.
  • We do not pay for information.
  • We do not invent quotes, composite characters or scenes. Quotes are not altered beyond trimming for length, and never in a way that changes their meaning.

Independence

Editorial decisions are made by the editors alone. Advertisers, partners and the publisher have no say over what we cover or how. Sponsored content, if we ever publish it, is clearly labelled and kept separate from journalism. Writers disclose any personal or financial interest in what they cover.

Opinion

Essays and opinion pieces express the views of their authors, not of Eastern Remarks. They are still held to the same standards of factual accuracy.

Images and AI

Photographs are not manipulated beyond standard adjustments of colour, exposure and cropping. Illustrations and photo-illustrations are labelled as such. We do not publish text or images generated by AI as journalism; if AI tools are used in research or production, a human editor is responsible for every word and image we publish.

Corrections

When we make a factual error, we correct it as soon as possible and add a note at the end of the article explaining what changed and when. We do not quietly edit published facts. Minor fixes of spelling or style are made without a note.

To report an error, write to contact@easternremarks.com with a link to the article and what needs correcting.

Right of reply

People and organisations that are the subject of serious allegations are given a fair opportunity to respond before publication. If you believe an article treated you unfairly, write to contact@easternremarks.com.
