[Name] is a historian rebuilding a photographic archive that was scattered after 1990. We spoke about lost negatives, family albums and what a city remembers. This interview has been edited and condensed. (Placeholder text for layout testing.)
How did the archive get lost in the first place?
Nobody decided to lose it. The institution closed, the building was sold, and the boxes went wherever someone had a dry basement.
Where do you find the photographs now?
Flea markets, attics, and increasingly online. Every week someone writes to say they found a box with our stamp on the back.
Why does it matter to put it back together?
Because a city without its pictures starts to believe its own myths. The archive is a way of checking.
